PHORAX - PHOSPHATE REDUCING INSERT
Phorax is a highly effective filtering medium used to break down phosphates in the aquarium. It effectively reduces algae growth and can contribute to improved plant growth. Phosphates regularly enter aquariums through fish food and are naturally very unlikely to be broken down. However, plants only need small amounts of phosphate for their natural growth (freshwater: 0.05 mg/l, saltwater: 0.01 mg/l). Too many phosphates can, in some cases, lead to rampant algae growth. Phorax consists of aluminum mineral that binds dissolved phosphate, forming insoluble aluminum phosphate and removing it from the water. This makes the Phorax insert very effective, binding up to 12 mg of phosphate per gram of Phorax.
