Reef Interests Biopellets XL 250ml - polymers reducing NO3 and PO4
Biopellets XL are polymers that serve as a source of organic carbon, effectively reducing nitrates (NO3) and to some extent phosphates (PO4) in the aquarium.

Description
BioPellets XL are much larger and heavier than standard pellets. The smaller surface area for bacteria to settle is balanced by its porosity. Unlike small pellets, XL pellets do not require movement in a fluidized filter. They can simply be placed in a canister filter or any other filter/reactor/filter sock where there is a high water flow. This is an ideal solution for smaller systems where there is no space for an additional reactor or for an aquarium without a filtration tank.
Biopellets XL serve as a medium where aerobic bacteria settle, multiply, and feed. In the nitrification process, the water is effectively cleaned of compounds such as nitrates and phosphates. The excess bacteria are consumed by corals and other aquarium inhabitants and removed from the water through a protein skimmer.
On average, it takes about 2-4 weeks to create a sufficient amount of bacteria and to start the process of reducing nitrate and phosphate levels. Over time, BioPellets XL are consumed by the bacteria and decrease in size, so their quantity needs to be replenished. The recommended starting dose is 25 g per 100 l of system volume, then slowly increase their amount until there are 100-200 g per 100 liters of water.
Advantages of this method:
- Biopellets XL stimulate local bacterial growth in the filter chamber, not throughout the entire aquarium.
- BioPellets XL are never replaced, only occasionally topped up to replenish their loss.
- This is an effective and simple way to eliminate nitrates and phosphates from water, requiring no daily dosing.
Important:
- A strong protein skimmer is needed, along with good aeration of the water in the aquarium.
- It is essential to maintain a high water flow through BioPellets XL to prevent the formation of hydrogen sulfide gas.
- The use of ozone and UV through the pellet medium negatively affects the settlement of bacteria on the pellets and prolongs the maturation time of the filter.
- With high levels of nitrates and phosphates, to avoid sudden spikes in parameters, it is recommended to use a smaller amount of biopellets at the beginning and gradually replenish them.
- If feeding heavily, it is advisable to add a phosphate adsorber, e.g., PO4X4.
