Carbon is usually acquired by plants from carbon dioxide, but it can also be absorbed from simple organic compounds (such as intermediates of photosynthesis). Providing CO2 in a gaseous form does not preclude the use of Flourish Excel and vice versa. Since the process of forming photosynthesis intermediates and their utilization occurs simultaneously, administering Flourish Excel is beneficial, regardless of whether the water is saturated with gaseous carbon dioxide or not. Alternating between both methods proves particularly effective in situations where adding CO2 could cause a rapid decrease in water pH. The preparation also has strong reducing properties towards iron, increasing the amount of Fe2+ ions, which are more readily absorbed by plants than Fe3+ ions. The final product of the photosynthesis process is glucose. In subsequent stages of its synthesis from carbon dioxide with the aid of light, intermediate products such as ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate and 2-carboxy-3-keto-D-arabinitol-1,5-bisphosphate are produced. Hidden behind these complex names are simple, five-carbon chains. Flourish Excel does not contain these compounds, but others similar in structure, thus providing plants with necessary components in a "ready form," eliminating the need to produce them from carbon dioxide and allowing them to process them into needed compounds through subsequent enzymatic reactions.
