Safe substrates from ECO PLANT or gravel from construction supplies?
Usually, gravels and sands available in auctions come from construction sites. This is the main reason for the formation of algae, the dying of plants and fish. The cause of this is unstable pH, unknown chemical compounds contained in the gravel, and inhabited viruses, fungi, and pathogens, present despite washing and boiling by the unfortunate user. It’s enough to buy a ton of gravel for two hundred and push it on aquarists as aquarium gravel. Enough with such hypocrisy!
Eco Plant offers natural gravels sourced from aquatic environments for your aquarium. This gravel has much better properties than construction gravel used for making concrete. It does not cause pH spikes, contains no harmful substances, and the only bacteria present are nitrifying bacteria. Due to its neutrality to water, structure, porosity, and color, this gravel has "anti-algal" properties. It does not promote the growth of algae.
Decoration or main substrate?
That depends on you. The gravel works great as a so-called "island" or river in the aquarium. You can also use it as the main substrate.
Is it suitable for planting plants?
Absolutely. You can easily plant aquatic plants in this substrate.
Should I rinse it or not?
The gravel is rinsed and colonized by bacteria. Unfortunately, during transport, there is slight abrasion of the gravel (stones rubbing against stones), causing a coating that needs to be rinsed off.
Rinsing takes little time and is safe. Remember to rinse it under running water that is slightly warm (lukewarm water). This will prevent excessive washing away of bacteria.
Why is the gravel wet after opening the package?
For two reasons:
1: it is taken straight from the water and packed in a double bag.
2: this allows bacteria to live and reproduce.
