Don't stress your pet - how to trim nails on your own?
First of all, it's good to teach this activity to your pet from a young age. An older cat or dog may have some objections and may be reluctant to approach the idea of having some strange tool near their paws. Nevertheless, every household member can handle this task independently.
Here are some simple rules for hassle-free nail trimming:
1. Teach nail trimming from a young age
2. Always give a reward - a treat after trimming. It’s important that one chosen type of treat (e.g., a paste) is reserved only as a reward after nail trimming. Do not give this treat (paste) without occasion! For "standard" pampering of your pet, choose another one (e.g., sausage)
3. If the cat or dog starts to struggle a lot, let them go. Reward for the effort with a smaller amount of treat. Try again in a moment. Each time - even if you manage to trim just one nail, reward them.
4. You can try wrapping the cat/dog in a towel or blanket while trimming their nails.
5. You can hold the skin on the back of your pet's neck. It will trigger the "mom is holding me - do nothing" program.
6. Ask someone for help. Let one person hold the pet while the other trims. You can do it alone as well. Sit the pet on your lap, facing away from you.
7. Distract them. Let them sniff the treat that you will give them afterward. After each nail, hold the treat under their nose.
Remember, no online guide or self-promoting seller can replace a veterinarian! If your cat or dog has exceptional problems with nail trimming, it may mean that something is wrong. (e.g., a broken toe, a torn claw) Always consult a specialist if you notice unusual behavior from your pet!
