Don't stress your pet - how to trim claws by yourself?
First of all, it's good to teach this activity to your pet from a young age. An older cat or dog may have some objections and will be reluctant to the idea of having some strange tool near its paws.
Nevertheless, any household member can handle this task on their own. Here are some simple rules for hassle-free claw trimming:
1. Teach claw trimming from the youngest age
2. Always give a reward after trimming - a treat. It’s important that one chosen type of treat (e.g., pâté) is reserved only as a reward after claw trimming. Do not give this treat (pâté) for no reason! For "standard" spoiling of your pet, choose another one (e.g., sausage)
3. If the cat or dog starts to struggle a lot, let it go. Reward it with a smaller amount of treats for the effort. Try again shortly. Each time - even if you only manage to trim one claw, reward them.
4. You can try wrapping the cat/dog in a towel or blanket while trimming the claws
5. You can hold the skin on the back of your pet's neck. It will activate the "mom is holding me - do nothing" program
6. Ask someone for help. Let one person hold the pet while the other trims. You can also do it alone. Sit the pet on your lap, facing away from you.
7. Distract it. Let it sniff the treat that you will give it later. After each claw, hold the treat under its nose.
Remember that no online guide or salesperson's boasting can replace a veterinarian! If your cat or dog has significant problems with claw trimming, it may indicate that something is wrong. (e.g., a broken toe, torn claw) Always consult a specialist when you notice unusual behavior in your pet!
Intended for large dog breeds.
