SunSun / Grech CBG-500S - cascade filter

Cascade filters have been created with the aim of achieving the best filtration through a large volume. At the same time, the design of the filter allows it to be placed outside the tank, thus saving space in the aquarium, and the return of water occurring through the cascade perfectly aerates the water in the aquarium. Such features of the filter significantly surpass internal filters, regardless of the volume of the aquarium.

The filter has a three-stage filtration system, consisting of the operation of three different filter media. Each of the media has a separate specially dedicated place, and the bulk media is placed in a container - basket. The filter media have a special "drawer" with a handle, allowing for quick removal from the filter.

Biological filtration is provided by bio-ceramic balls of varying porosity. The balls serve as a habitat for bacteria that reduce the concentration of NH3, NH4, and NO2 in the aquarium, while also impacting the health of the fish and providing a natural nutrient source for plants.

Chemical filtration is ensured by activated carbon, which effectively binds metals and their compounds, humic substances, pesticides, and metabolic products. It acts as a clarifying medium for the water and reduces unpleasant odors. It improves water quality, including biological filtration.

Mechanical filtration is provided by a sponge of appropriate grading. It removes all impurities from the water, clarifying it of all dust, plant remnants, or small floating substrate parts.

The filter media baskets can accommodate any filter media depending on the needs of the tank.


Water intake to the filter occurs through two pipes with different applications. The lower pipe draws water from the closest possible vicinity of the bottom. This way, the filter sucks in impurities that settle on the bottom, which are a common cause of substrate mulm and deterioration of water quality. The second inlet is located partially above the water surface - colloquially referred to as the surface skimmer. It draws water directly from the surface, removing all floating impurities and proteins that are visible to the human eye as a greasy spot. This exceptionally unsightly film is highly dangerous for health and water quality, thus a filter that neutralizes it ensures the best and complete water filtration quality.
The filter has a smooth, stepless flow regulation, and thus efficiency. The adjustment allows the filter to be adapted to aquariums from 38 to 115 liters in capacity.
On the skimmer pipe, an additional flow regulation has been placed, which allows easy adjustment of the efficiency level of this inlet along with the lower inlet from 0% to 100% flow.

The telescopic lower water inlet and special base enable easy and quick installation of the device in any aquarium, regardless of the height of the tank or the thickness of the glass from which it is made.

The filter from SunSun is built on years of experience. It is characterized by reliability and efficient operation. The rotor, which is the heart of the device, is resistant to high pressure from the pumped water and furthermore has a shaft made of sintered stainless steel with titanium, allowing the pump to operate in seawater.
